Welcome to Fintan McKiernan.com
Welcome to the inspiration and aspiration world of my photography. For the past twenty years I have been taking photos for fun, on holidays, whilst on my travels, to show the people who couldn't join me on countless trips around the corner and around the globe. But these images serve also, as a back up for my memory. This has proved effective to such an extent that I'm not sure if my memory serves me a recollection of a time and place or my recollection of the photo I took whilst I was there. Photography certainly freezes, freezes time, fashions, bad hair do's ugly schoolgirls who turned out elegant ladies and country scenes of my suburban Dublin birthplace, quickly forgotten as they're eaten by concrete and tarmac of accelerated urban sprawl.
I never really though of my self as a photographer, albeit my odd snap happy shot would be used in the occasional magazine, house sales catalogue and more sadly in one case, as the memorial photo for my beloved Grandfather.
So what's this site all about? Well as with all things, life included, it's what you make of it yourself. When I moved to Kinsale in Co. Cork in the summer of 2003, memorable as the best summer for ten years, I became aware of beauty, natural beauty, beauty in the simple things. But as I've learned from my past, one can forget, forget the beauty in simple things. As I look back through my albums of growing up, I remember, people, voices and even smells. Photographs are powerful things, dangerous things, but for me, are a wonderful hobby, and the look good on my wall. This is a hobby that I wish to share.
I decided last year to start a record the interesting, possibly mundane, hopefully sometimes beautiful and perhaps even thought provoking scenes that I witness in the few spare moments that I steal from a ferociously busy career. These photos are to remind me that somewhere between my laptop and my phone, when my life seems to be electronically organised to precision on a digital palm top, that there is something more. Something that isn't hard to find, the hard part is remembering to look, to take the time to look.
Albeit that I prefer film, I have to confess to trading my 35mm Canon EOS in for a 8 Mega Pixel Sony with a Zeiss Lens, I miss the hit and miss that I used to have with my old camera, but excessive travel and life on the road forced me into digital convenience.
So please feel free to have a browse through this selection of my photo's. For me they are all memories, of weekends mainly, and the odd night shot on a tripod, taken as bemused passers by wonder what the lunatic is doing in the darkness with a tripod under the moon. Which crosses my mind too, especially when a whole reel of film develops, under or over exposed. (not any more!!)
Remember, take some time to look around, today, not tomorrow, it could be raining!
